Sympathy For the Devil - MJ Hyland on Raoul Moat’s Facebook Fans

After Raoul Moat went on a murderous rampage in Northumbria, which ended in his suicide, a number of ‘fan pages’ have sprung up on Facebook. In a guest commentary for the Scottish Herald, Maria wrote a lengthy piece on both Moat and the fan pages. The entire piece can be read here

Here’s a short extract:

“Perhaps this Facebook phenomenon stands for nothing; an elaborate and contagious joke. But I don’t think so. I think there’s immense damage showing. Moat killed the wrong man, Chris Brown, and when he took aim at his ex, Sam Stobbart, with the intention of killing her, he missed, hit her in the stomach, and she lived. Instead of killing a cop, he shot PC David Rathband in the face and took his eyes out. And then Moat stopped firing bullets and fled.

Moat’s fans want him to be all that he wasn’t and they’ve filled in the gaps; they’ve made him a better character in a richer and more satisfying story. They’ve made his story a fiction that suits them better; and ignored what makes a nonsense of their claims.”
